Kitchen Exhaust Ductwork Missing Access Panels? What It Means

A kitchen exhaust duct can only be cleaned where a technician can reach it. When a duct run has bends, long horizontal sections or risers without openings, parts of it cannot be inspected or cleaned properly. That is why access panels matter.
If your service report notes “no access” for part of the ductwork, those sections may not be getting cleaned.
What is an access panel?
An access panel is a sealed, removable opening in the side of the duct. It lets a technician inspect and clean the inside of the duct, then close it again so it remains airtight and grease-tight.
Signs your ductwork needs more access
- Previous reports say sections could not be reached.
- The duct has long horizontal runs, several bends or passes through ceilings and floors.
- Grease is visible at joints or around the fan, but nobody can confirm the duct between has been cleaned.
- The system has been altered during a fit-out without new openings being added.
Why it matters
AIRAH’s commercial kitchen exhaust guidance recommends inspection and cleaning wherever grease deposits require it. Uncleaned duct sections can hold grease that adds to fire load and is hard to see until it becomes a problem. Missing access also means your records show only part of the system.
Who installs access panels?
Kitchen exhaust ductwork is designed and installed by mechanical services professionals to the Australian ventilation standard AS 1668.2, and any panels added to grease ductwork need to be installed correctly so they remain sealed and grease-tight.
We can supply and install access hatches into your ductwork where they are needed. When we find sections we cannot reach during a kitchen exhaust clean, we note them in your report with photos and can quote the hatches required to bring those sections into the cleaning scope.
What to do next
- Check your latest report for any “no access” or “partial clean” notes.
- Ask your cleaning contractor to mark where access is missing.
- Have access added by a qualified installer.
- Schedule a full clean once access is in place, so the whole duct is recorded in your service records.
