Australian Standard A.S. 3666.2-2011 outlines a minimum set of requirements for the cleaning of building HVAC systems, including:
- Building air intakes and outlets shall be inspected monthly and cleaned where necessary,
- Air filters shall be inspected monthly and cleaned or replaced, where necessary,

Although Australian Standard AS 3666.2 details that HVAC ducts & coils should be inspected monthly, in practice this is not always necessary. The relevant standard, AS 3666.2 specifies that ducts and coils are cleaned \’when necessary\’. In practice, for most systems, this would be once per year at least.
Australian Standard AS181 states that canopies and exhausts should be cleaned at least once every 12 months.
However, best practice is very often a lot higher than that. It will depend on the fuel (solid / non-solid), the food cooked and the cooking frequency.
A better way to define the frequency is that the canopy and exhaust system should be cleaned when the grease build-up exceeds 0.2 mm on average across the system or if the grease build-up exceeds 2 mm in any one spot.
